The Thorn Tree Effect

The Science of “No Landing”: Why Spikes Work

You might be wondering: is this humane, and does it really work?

Think of a thorn tree. Birds aren’t afraid of it — they just know there’s nowhere flat or comfortable to land or nest. Ecogreen bird spikes work the same way.

This is called the biomimicry principle. Our spikes mimic natural thorns, creating an uneven surface that birds instinctively avoid. They see the spikes, realise they can’t land comfortably, and simply move on.

The Art of Invisibility

The choice of plastic vs stainless steel bird spikes ultimately comes down to your personal preference and the specific needs of your property. Both options have their own unique benefits and are 100% effective at deterring birds.

  • Polycarbonate (Clear & Colours):
These are popular because they are tough, durable, and offer excellent, cost-effective value. The clear plastic absorbs the colours of your roof and sky, helping them blend into the background. The colour spikes become virtually invisible when paired with a similar colour background. Imagine dark wooden rafters in a dark warehouse with the brown or black bird spikes.
  • Stainless Steel:
Manufactured using Grade 302 Spring Stainless Steel, these wires are much thinner than plastic spikes, making them harder to see from a distance. As a slightly higher price-point option, it is the preferred choice for a premium finish, where the spikes virtually disappear against the skyline.

South African Tough vs. Sun-Brittle Breakdown

If you’ve ever bought cheap plastic outdoor furniture that became brittle and chalky after a summer in the South African sun, you know why quality matters. We manufacture locally using UV-stabilised polycarbonate. This means our products don’t just survive UV exposure — they stand up to it. Whether it’s blistering Karoo heat or salt-laden coastal air, our spikes stay flexible and strong for years.

Common Questions — Straight Answers

Do these work for cats and monkeys?

Yes. While designed specifically for birds, many of our South African clients use them effectively to deter cats and monkeys from walking on boundary walls, balcony ledges, or rooftops and roof edges. The instability and discomfort discourage them from climbing or walking on the surfaces, without causing them injury.

What glue should I use?

Ask your local hardware store for a high-quality outdoor construction adhesive (like a 'heavy duty' or 'high-tack' type suitable for outdoors). These glues are designed to handle the sun and rain without failing. Avoid silicone, as it is not strong enough to hold spikes permanently and will eventually peel off.

Will I feel guilty installing these?

Not at all. Spikes are a passive "No Entry" sign. Unlike electric shock tracks or ultrasonic noise emitters, spikes are silent and safe. The bird simply sees the barrier and moves on.

Can I really install this myself?

Absolutely. If you can squeeze a glue gun, you can install our spikes. You don't need a degree in engineering. [View our easy, step-by-step Bird Spike Installation Guide]
